🧠 Would You Recognize a Stroke? Learn the FAST Signs to Save a Life 🧠

Every second counts when someone is having a stroke. The quicker you recognize the signs and call for help, the better the outcome. That’s why knowing the FAST acronym can be the difference between recovery and lifelong disability—or even death.

What Is FAST?

FAST is a simple way to remember the most common warning signs of a stroke:

  • F – Face: Is one side of the face drooping? Ask the person to smile.
  • A – Arms: Can they raise both arms, or does one drift downward?
  • S – Speech: Is their speech slurred or strange? Can they repeat a simple sentence?
  • T – Time: If you see any of these signs, call 911 immediately.

⏱️ Time lost is brain lost. On average, 1.9 million brain cells die every minute that a stroke goes untreated.

Why FAST Matters

Recognizing a stroke quickly means:

  • Faster access to life-saving medications like tPA (a clot-busting drug)
  • A better chance of avoiding long-term disability
  • Increased survival rates

People who receive emergency treatment within the first 3 hours of symptom onset tend to have the best outcomes. Acting FAST really does save lives.

What to Do If You Suspect a Stroke

  1. Stay calm, but act quickly.
  2. Call 911 immediately—do not attempt to drive the person to the hospital.
  3. Note the time the symptoms began—EMS will need this information.
  4. If the person loses consciousness and isn’t breathing, start CPR if trained.

Even if symptoms disappear, they could have had a mini-stroke (TIA). Always seek medical help.

Where CPR Comes In

Strokes and cardiac arrest are different emergencies, but they can overlap—especially if the stroke causes the person to stop breathing. This is why I always emphasize that basic life support (BLS) training prepares you for a wide range of medical emergencies, not just heart-related ones.

Knowing how to recognize a stroke and respond with confidence can truly be life-saving.

Spread the Word. Save a Life.

Take 5 minutes today to share the FAST acronym with your loved ones. Print it out, post it at work, talk to your kids or aging parents. The more people who know the signs, the more lives we can save together.
